FLASH (Ultra-High Dose Rate) Radiotherapy is an emerging cancer treatment modality that delivers radiation doses in milliseconds rather than minutes with a significant reduction in healthy tissue effects while maintaining while tumour-killing efficacy.
Preclinical studies are essential in the translation of this technique from the bench to the bedside and the researchers at Queens’ University Belfast have been exploring this using photon FLASH since the installation of one of the first Xstrahl FLASH systems in 2023.
This SPOTLIGHT session explores the fundamental dosimetry and characteristics of a photon-based FLASH system while highlighting the use of the system to investigate normal tissue sparing in superficial and deep-seated preclinical models.
