Benign Radiotherapy 101

July 21, 2025

Radiation therapy is widely known for its role in treating cancer, but its benefits extend far beyond oncology. Low and intermediate doses of radiation therapy have a long and proven history in managing benign indications, particularly for hyperproliferative, degenerative, and inflammatory conditions. For decades, radiotherapy has been used safely and effectively in low and intermediate doses across Germany and other parts of Europe to treat osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, Dupuytren’s disease, keloid scarring, and many other benign diseases.

In this webinar, Xstrahl’s Medical Director, Dr. Richard Shaffer, provides a brief overview of benign radiotherapy and describes how low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) can be used to treat plantar fasciitis and osteoarthritis affecting joints such as the hands, knees, hips, and shoulders. Studies show that LDRT can offer meaningful pain relief and improved mobility for 70–80% of osteoarthritis patients.

This webinar is part of Dr. Shaffer’s broader efforts to raise awareness of radiotherapy’s role in managing benign conditions. He leads several other related educational programs through the International Organisation for Radiotherapy for Benign Conditions (iorbc.com) and the Radiotherapy Academy for Benign Conditions (RT-ABC.com).
