Xstrahl Delivers CIX FLASH, the First Commercial X-Ray Based Preclinical FLASH Irradiator
CIX FLASH supports translational research into current and expanded FLASH radiotherapy techniques
Xstrahl announced today the first delivery of CIX FLASH, the world’s first commercial X-ray based preclinical FLASH Irradiator to the Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Medicine along with the Sydney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC) at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The CIX FLASH gives investigators tools to expand preclinical radiation studies using a patented FLASH technique, further supporting translational research into effective cancer treatments.
FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT) is a novel, emerging technique whereby tumors are treated with ultra-high dose rates of radiation. Remarkably, this has been shown to reduce damage to normal tissue while effectively treating diseased areas when compared to conventional therapy.
The CIX FLASH marks a milestone with the availability of a system specifically designed for preclinical research that can be used in a standard laboratory environment.
“We are thrilled to be installing this system with the radiation oncology group at Johns Hopkins University,” said Adrian Treverton, CEO of Xstrahl. “Professor Mohammad Rezaee and Professor John Wong at JHU have an extensive history in pioneering novel techniques for radiotherapy and we are pleased to have been able to incorporate their pioneering work with X-ray FLASH in to the CIX FLASH system. Xstrahl and JHU are official collaborators in an NCI sponsored R01 grant.”
“Preclinical research is hugely important for a technique like FLASH, which really could be a new cornerstone of radiation therapy,” Treverton added. “This research will have a massive impact on radiation oncology. We’re all focused on getting FLASH into radiation therapy for oncology patients, and everything we do here will drive that translational research.”
Xstrahl delivers a full line of radiation research devices including systems for image-guided radiation therapy and several types of cabinet irradiators. As the only company that delivers both clinical radiation therapy devices and preclinical radiation research systems worldwide, Xstrahl offers unique expertise in R&D specialized in radiation.
