About Advanced Skin & Laser Center
Advanced Skin and Laser Center, located at 1649 Westgate Circle in Brentwood, TN, is a full-service medical dermatology practice serving the greater Nashville area. Led by Dr. Binhlam, a board-certified Mohs surgeon, ASLC provides expert care for skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma through both surgical and non-surgical treatment options.
No matter where you are in your skin cancer journey, ASLC builds a treatment plan around your diagnosis, your health, and your priorities.
What Is SRT?
Superficial Radiation Therapy is a non-surgical treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers, primarily basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Using the Xstrahl Radiant Aura device, low-energy X-rays are precisely targeted at the cancer site, damaging cancerous cells without surgery, without cutting, and without the recovery time that comes with an operation.
Because the radiation penetrates only a few millimeters below the skin surface, SRT is especially well-suited for cancers on the face, nose, ears, and scalp where surgical scarring is a real concern, as well as hands, feet, and shins where there is not enough skin for easy closure.
How It Works
- Short, in-office sessions, typically a few times per week
- Up to 20 total sessions to complete a full course of treatment
- No anesthesia, no incisions, no recovery downtime
- Radiation targets only the cancer site and surrounding healthy tissue is protected
Who Is a Good Candidate?
SRT may be right for you if you:
- Prefer to avoid surgery
- Have a skin cancer on or near the face, ears, scalp, or neck
- Take blood thinners or have conditions that make surgery more complex
- Are concerned about post-surgical scarring or appearance
Dr. Binhlam will review your diagnosis, cancer type, size, and location during a consultation to confirm whether SRT is the right option for you.
Standard Excisional Surgery
For many patients, surgical excision remains the most straightforward treatment path. The physician removes the growth along with a margin of healthy surrounding tissue and the sample is sent to a lab for analysis. This approach is commonly used for melanoma, atypical mole removals, and smaller skin cancers and is typically completed in one visit.
Mohs Micrographic Surgery
For higher-risk cancers, including those that have recurred, are located on the head, neck, hands, or feet, or where tissue preservation is critical, Mohs surgery is the gold standard. The tumor is removed one thin layer at a time, with each layer examined under a microscope on the same day. This continues until the margins are completely clear, delivering the highest available cure rates with minimal tissue loss.
Dr. Binhlam is a trained Mohs surgeon. This level of in-office surgical capability is uncommon among Nashville-area dermatology practices.

“He gave me several options for my multiple skin cancers and newer treatment options for pre-cancerous lesions. I felt he understood my concerns and left feeling very satisfied that I had decided to return to his practice after being away for a period of time.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Is SRT painful?
No. SRT sessions are non-invasive and generally well-tolerated. There are no needles, no cutting, and no anesthesia involved. Most patients find the sessions quick and comfortable.
Does insurance cover SRT?
Coverage varies by plan. SRT is an FDA-cleared treatment and many insurance plans do cover it for eligible diagnoses. We recommend calling our office at 615.843.SKIN (7546) before your consultation so our team can help clarify your coverage.
How soon can I be seen?
Most consultations at ASLC are available within days of your request. No referral is needed. Simply book online or call us directly. If you have an existing biopsy result, bring it with you and Dr. Binhlam can often discuss your options at the same appointment.
Is SRT as effective as surgery?
For the types and stages of non-melanoma skin cancer SRT is designed to treat, it achieves a cure rate of over 95%. While Mohs surgery holds the highest documented cure rates for aggressive or recurrent cancers, SRT is a clinically proven treatment and for many patients it is the right choice given their location, health profile, or personal preference.
What if I am not a candidate for SRT?
Dr. Binhlam is a trained Mohs surgeon, so if SRT is not right for you, surgical excision or Mohs micrographic surgery can be performed in the same office. You will not need to be referred elsewhere. Dr. Binhlam will review all appropriate options during your consultation.
Do I need a referral?
