Xstrahl 200 Enables Gold Nanoparticle Research

September 2, 2020

Kilo-voltage X-ray therapy has long established itself as a highly effective method for treating non-melanoma skin cancer and a number of other oncology diseases. One of the most interesting scientific area in the field of radiation therapy is radiosensitization by Gold Nanoparticles.

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) emerged as promising anti-tumor radiosensitizers. However, the complex dependence of GNPs radiosensitization on the irradiation conditions remains unclear.

Scientists of the Federal Medical Biological Center. A.I. Burnazyan FMBA of Russia (V.N. Morozov, M.A., Kolyvanova, etc.) are the world’s leading researchers in the study of the influence of the size and localization of gold nanoparticles on the dose increase factor. At the moment, on the basis of Moscow oncology hospital No. 62 studies on the influence of the radiation spectrum on the efficiency of radiosensitization of particles are being carried out. In the course of the experiment, samples containing gold nanoparticles and DNA are irradiated at a dose of 0.2 Gray / min with the Xstrahl 200 system.

Experiments show that the factor of increasing the dose rate depends on the voltage and radiation energy. The possibility of approximating experimental data to real clinical conditions is of great importance; therefore, the possibility of conducting research on clinical X-ray therapy devices is so important for the success of the experiment. Scientists are grateful to the Xstrahl limited and hospital No. 62 for this opportunity to perform research in the clinical practice!
