User Spotlight: Just Skin Treatment Clinic uses the Xstrahl 100 for the treatment of skin cancer in Australia
The Xstrahl 100 is perfectly suited for the treatment of superficial skin cancers such as Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). With Australia recording one of the highest rates of skin cancer diagnosis in the world, an effective and versatile treatment method is needed. Offering a terrific alternative to the traditional surgical treatment for these types of skin cancers, Just Skin Treatment Clinic have partnered with the Xstrahl 100 to deliver highly beneficial results.
Just Skin & Dr Colin Dicks
Working to combat the steep rise in skin cancer diagnoses, and to support the many patients where surgery was not a suitable treatment option, Dr Colin Dicks and Just Skin Treatment Clinic opened with a mission to offer an exceptional solution for the non-surgical treatment of skin cancer. To do this, they invested in an Xstrahl 100 X-ray radiotherapy system. Unlike more invasive treatment options, the Xstrahl 100’s unique design allows for a highly effective treatment, with little to no cosmetic changes.
Since opening in March 2017, running the clinic and treating patients has not only allowed Dr Dicks and the team to successfully assist many patients looking for an alternative to surgery, but they have also seen first-hand the outstanding results achieved from the treatment and the corresponding satisfaction given to the patients.
Superficial Skin Cancers
While there are many ways to treat superficial skin cancers, surgery seems to be the standard solution for many practitioners. Unfortunately, however, surgery is not suitable for all patients’ due to factors such pre-existing medical conditions, medication, age and/or the location of the lesion and impending results surgery may have to physical appearance.
Superficial therapy is very similar to a diagnostic X-ray, meaning it only treats and penetrates the top layers of the skin, sparing the deeper underlying tissue. This is targeted therapy, attacking affected cells only and results in high cure rates and minimal scarring. While it is suitable for SCC and BCC, other non-melanoma skin malignancies as well as non-cancerous scarring of the skin known as keloids can also be treated via this method.
We realised that there was a need for superficial radiation treatment. Superficial therapy precisely only treats the skin and offers an effective non- surgical alternative. At Just Skin, we have combined superficial therapy with our quest to provide an exceptional customer experience. We cannot be happier with the result.

All patients are generally referred to Just Skin Treatment Clinic by a GP or skin specialist. The first appointment entails a consultation with Radiation Oncologist, Dr Dicks, who will review their medical history and examine their skin to determine the best treatment option. If superficial radiation therapy is an option, Dr Dicks completes a treatment prescription.
The next step involves Dr Dicks and Radiation Therapist, Martin Noller, recording the area of skin that needs to be treated. This area is usually drawn on the skin and then, using accurate skin landmarks, the region is recorded and/or photographed. Once the treatment calculations have been finalised and the skin areas have been marked and documented, the patients are scheduled for treatment.
Incredibly, treatment takes less than a minute for each lesion, with up to six lesions being treated in one session. It’s a painless and perfectly safe procedure whereby the therapist ensures that the patient is comfortable, introduces any protective shielding for areas of non-affected skin and positions the Xstrahl machine accurately to treat the skin.
The Xstrahl 100 movement range of the treatment arm enables smooth adjustments and easy set up for each treatment area. Its flexibility makes it particularly suited for treating lesions that are difficult to access, such as the head and neck, without compromising patient comfort.
While it is possible to treat skin cancers with a single treatment, this may cause unnecessary skin scarring. The more treatments given, the smaller the chance of scarring, therefore, standard therapy is generally given over 2-4 weeks.
We believe, every cancer is important and that every cancer should be the treated in the best way possible. One of the best ways to treat skin cancer is with superficial radiotherapy. At Just Skin we have a simple philosophy: The best care, in the best environment, using the best equipment.

The Xstrahl 100 is a modern low energy X-ray treatment system. It delivers a gentle beam of X-ray to the skin damaging the DNA of cancer cell, meaning it cannot survive. The dead cancer cells are eliminated and the skin recovers with good function and a good cosmetic outcome.
With extremely high rates of skin cancer diagnosis in Australia, surgery is not always a the most affective and suitable treatment option. With this in mind, the advantages of using the Xstrahl 100’s superficial radiotherapy treatment is clear. Just Skin Treatment Clinic is proof that providing this treatment option is not only generating terrific results but patients are enjoying the physical benefits as well.
