A Medical Physicist’s Perspective on Superficial & Orthovoltage Radiotherapy

May 6, 2021

Kilovoltage X-ray equipment maintains an integral role in the modern radiation therapy department for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer as well as other benign conditions and palliative applications. The use of low energy, therapeutic X-rays is often a preferred treatment method, especially when treating lesions at shallow depths, due to the physics of low energy X-rays. The relatively low cost, simplicity, and low maintenance requirements of the equipment is also a benefit.

In this webcast, Dr. Dominika Oborska-Kumaszyńska, a medical physicist from Cancer Centre London, offers a technical point-of-view on superficial and orthovoltage therapies. Dr. Oborska-Kumaszynska reviews some technical aspects of various clinical applications and presents on the advantages of kV vs. high-energy photon radiation. She also provides an overview of acceptance, commissioning, and routine quality control for these types of low-energy systems.
