Treatment Comparison Study Between Electrons and Photons

August 13, 2020

Radiotherapy has a long standing and well-established role in the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer. There are multiple radiotherapy modalities available, all of which provide good local control rates, but each requires a different radiotherapy pathway. The team at Fraser Valley Cancer Centre conducted a review of the resources and the associated costs between two common definitive radiotherapy techniques – orthovoltage X-rays and megavoltage electrons.

For the 20 patient cases reviewed, the orthovoltage radiotherapy pathway proved to be more cost effective in terms of staff costs and time required. A time benefit was also noted for the patients who had shorter overall appointment times and a reduced number of appointments.
